Web scale pubsub

Looks like people are now starting to talk about a de-centralized, Web native pubsub system. Now is the time, if applications are going to avoid being based on a single company's service. Too bad pubsub.com and KnowNow aren't driving this.

Where?

In a way, "we" actually are... Many of the proposals being made today, and the systems being built by Twitter, rely on the XMPP PubSub extensions (XEP-0060), "Atom over XMPP" and other components, protocols, or patterns that we worked hard to develop and get agreement to some years ago. So, even though it is others doing the development today, they are still benefiting from the work we did years ago to prepare for this. Too bad we couldn't have gotten this done sooner...

Who's talking about this? How would it work?

The 'talk' I noticed is over at TechCrunch - http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/05/twitter-can-be-liberated-heres-how/

The interesting piece I see being needed is the distributed subscription/filtering system.

The people talking about this are pundits mostly, but they do seem to be reflecting real user's needs and desires in this case.

The work Bob mentions shows that it wasn't too hard to predict the need for this decentralized system, but until a 'killer app' is born, that need wouldn't the the thing driving adoption.
